Supernatural Review; Swan Song (Season 5 Finale)
First of all, I have to say that I had to watch this episode twice last night and was not able to get my review up until this morning because there was so much to write about lol. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.
So the recap, by tradition of course, was filled with the gloriousness that is Kansas’ Wayward Son. I think all the fans did a little fist pump and started dancing in their seats.
So the show opens and Sam and Dean are discussing Lucifer and saying yes. I’m not going to go too much into it because then I’d be analyzing every sentence and that might take several hours. Anyway, without describing every scene that happened in the finale, I only have a few things to say about this episode.
- Mark Pellegrino is amazing. I’m going to miss him.
- Jared really stepped it up in this episode (although there were some awkward moments where I was beginning to question is acting ability but he managed to pull it together when it counted lol)
- Jensen brought Dean to a whole new, heartbroken level.
- Jim Beaver was fantastic as usual. Loved that Bobby is the official Dad symbol.
- Misha is always amazing and was particularly hilarious and adorable in this episode, giving Cas the perfect characterization.
The next points that I’ll point out are what I believe to be the most important parts of the finale.
- The Impala. A symbol of Sam and Dean’s home away from home. Like Chuck said, they were never truly homeless as long as they had that car. Loved the imagry of Sam and Dean as children, leaving toy soldiers in the ashtrays, legos in the ventilation system, carving their names into the wood. I was wondering for about the entire episode why Chuck seemed to have been writing a eulogy for the Impala and was quite worried but realized he was only explaining the symbolic importance of the entire series as a whole. Family.
- Chuck. The sneaky revelation at the end of his true being (which was clever, might I add) gave the end of the finale a very powerful moment. It allowed us to see that the whole point of the story wasn’t the Apocalypse or Good vs Evil or even Man vs Free Will. It was all about, once again, family. Kripke of course teased the fans lovingly, probably inserting alot of himself into Chuck and I really enjoyed that his narrative book ended the entire episode.
- Sam and Dean. Throughout all five seasons, they’ve struggled with each other, grown closer as brothers, matured (well, as much as Dean can mature lolol <3 ) and have been ripped apart numerous times. This finale proved, even with Sam filled with demon blood and Lucifer, that not even an Apocalypse can take away the strength of their relationship. The flashbacks were particularly useful in displaying this, reiterating all 5 seasons thus far and reminding us how far this show has come.
- Bobby. The father figure. Despite selling his soul to Crowley (which wasn’t all that bad considering that he had given Bobby back his legs) he has always remained a strong character in the brother’s lives since the end of season 1.
- Castiel. I’ve always been biased towards him because he’s just such an interesting character but I won’t blab on for five paragraphs about him this time, I promise lol. Castiel started out as a feared Angel of the Lord, began doubting his orders and having compassion for humans, then fell and became human. This episode showed how far he has come as a character (and maybe a little too close to 2014!Cas) but in the end, was able to retain the very core of who he is. A gentle soldier, loyal and protective.
This has to be the only finale I will add to my list of favorite episodes. To be honest, it felt more like a series finale and Eric Kripke probably planned it that way considering the fact that he will no longer be the show runner next year. I would have preferred if season 5 had been the last and I honestly can’t see what season 6 could possibly be about but I assume it will probably have something to do with the last scene involving Sam.
While I would have liked to have seen Michael!Dean, Michael!Adam was very impressive. I also pretty much cried out in joy when Def Leppard’s Rock of Ages started playing as Dean drove into the cemetary. It has been too long since we’ve had some good classic rock on this show. BOO CW I’M LOOKING AT YOU, YOU CHEAP NETWORK.
All in all, my favorite finale thus far. And without spoiling too much, YAY CAS AND BOBBY. I KNEW THAT LONG COMMERICAL BREAK WOULD LEAD TO SOME HAPPINESS. <3
Overall, I’d give this episode a 10/10
